Submission on Greenwashing to Senate Inquiry
Greenwashing is deceptive corporate advertising designed to portray the company as caring for the environment when in fact little effort has been made to reduce energy waste or undertake other measures to reduce harm to the environment.
In 2023, Lawyers for Climate Justice Australia wrote a submission to the Senate Standing Committees on Environment and Communications for its inquiry into greenwashing.
We noted that the deceptive practice of greenwashing inhibits deep and drastic action needed to avert the worst consequences of climate change.
We recommended the need for immediate and increased government regulation to ban greenwashing in Australia, including by increasing enforcement powers of the ACCC and ASIC.
